How to Build a Team of Devs That Improves Itself

  • In a complex adaptive system, there is no predictability: That’s what makes them complex.
  • Recall that complex systems (from the Cynefin framework) have the property where cause and effect are only made clear after the fact.
  • Once you change a system, the rest of your plans are suspect.
  • Probe-sense-respond through a series of safe-to-fail experiments. This is how we make progress when we don’t know the answers until we’ve tried it.
  • Make it genuinely safe to be wrong (this doesn’t mean careless).
  • Keep experiments small and reversible.
  • Build experiments on testable guesses.
  • Meet people where they are.
  • When every release is already fast and safe enough, fast and safe stop being a tradeoff.
  • “How do we get things right?” –> “How do we learn what to do next?”
