The Science Behind Dramatically Better Conversations
Discussions typically have multiple conversations — practical (what’s this really about), emotional (how do we feel), social (who are we). Things get off the rails when you’re having one conversation and the other person wants a different one. Deep questions (“what do you love about your job” vs “where do you work”) help us determine which conversation we’re having. The speaker suggested, “When is the last time you cried in front of someone” as a deep question that, when you also answer it, demonstrates reciprocal vulnerability. These are skills you can learn to better connect with others.
