This project was a test subject to learn how to paint the figures that come with the board game version of Deep Rock Galactic.
Here’s a gallery with ~90 pictures. This project took me about 5 hours to complete.
Things I learned:
- Army Painter is a good brand for painting minis. I discovered them through watching another artist paint one of the Deep Rock figures.
- Zumikito Miniatures has very helpful videos about lighting effects for minis.
- I have a better understanding of zenithal highlighting.
- My choice of skin tone was too dark/green, which made the model look like a blend of earth tones (read: little contrast). I fixed it by lightening the color with several thin coats.
- I found a way to add some contrast by using clear varnish on the exposed muscle, making it appear reflective.
- Object source highlighting is a technique to make things glow and reflect. To try this out, I made the mace glow yellow.
- This was the first time I used a wet palette to blend various colors — yellow with orange, orange with gun metal, and yellow with the skin color.
