6 Behavioral Nudges to Reduce Bias in Hiring and Promotions (via HBR)
- Generate ranked criteria (i.e., pre-determined, prioritized qualifications for a position)
- Challenge yourself to support the opposite opinion (we tend to favor early options and undervalue contradictory evidence that comes later)
- Modify the environment; choice architecture = how alternatives are presented to decision-makers. For example, people make different decisions when they are tired or hungry
- Invert the default rules (e.g., promote people by default unless there’s some reason they shouldn’t be )
- Use planning prompts to articulate concrete action plans
- Shape information effectively; it needs to be compelling and can be framed as a gain or a loss
