I think the advice in this article applies to anyone, not just executives. It’s very difficult to completely compartmentalize our personal self from our professional self. The author does an excellent job of stating that many of the things we learn in our formative years — how to manage power dynamics, how to solve problems, what we share and keep secret, etc. — informs how we interact in the workplace.

  • Common clues… (1) you don’t know what you want to do next, (2) you aren’t sure how to make your resume substantive yet simple, (3) you aren’t over your current job, (4) you’ve been interviewing but haven’t gotten offers, (5) you’re not moving up in your career.
  • How to hire… (1) know what type of professional you need, (2) know what services you need / don’t need, (3) try sample sessions with several coaches to find the right fit, (4) research their training, certs, and experience, (5) consider cost, cadence, and contact.

  • It’s no longer encouraging your growth.
  • You’ve achieved what you set out to achieve.
  • You actively look for ways to avoid your job.
  • You regularly approach work with exhaustion, burnout, or dread.

What regret can teach you about living a good life (via TED)

  • If only I’d reached out and connected. If only I’d taken a chance and acted boldly. If only I’d done the foundational work (e.g., saving, health). If only I’d done the right thing.
  • On reflection, I regret not giving up sooner on losing strategies and lost causes; so, I guess the “act boldly” category.
  • We want a life of stability, the ability to take risks, to do the right thing, and to have people around us that we love and likewise.
